USCIS Publishes Updated Version of Form I‑9 for Employment Eligibility Verification
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) – an agency of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that oversees lawful immigration to the United States – has published an updated version of the “Form I‑9, Employment Eligibility Verification” with an edition date of 01/20/2025 and an expiration date of 05/31/2027. The new form is at www.uscis.gov/i-9.
The USCIS has made minor changes to the Form I-9 that all U.S. employers must properly complete to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired to work in the United States. While the new Form I-9 is available for download, two previous versions of the Form I-9 with edition dates of 08/01/2023 remain valid until their respective expiration dates:
- Form I-9 with an edition date of 08/01/2023 and an expiration date of 05/31/2027.
- Form I-9 with an edition date of 08/01/2023 and an expiration date of 07/31/2026. (Employers using this Form I-9 must update their electronic systems with a version of the Form I-9 with an expiration date of 05/31/2027 by 07/31/2026.)
Key updates to the revised Form I-9 include renaming the fourth checkbox in Section 1 to “An alien authorized to work,” revising the descriptions of two List B documents in the Lists of Acceptable Documents, and adding appropriate statutory language and a revised DHS Privacy Notice to the instructions. The new Form I-9 is available in English and Spanish versions.
