ClearStar Logistics Attains U.S.-EU and U.S.-Swiss Background Check Safe Harbor Certification

ClearStar Logistics, Inc., a leading background screening industry services provider, today announced self-certification of its compliance with the U.S.-European Union (U.S.-EU) and U.S. Switzerland (U.S.-Swiss) Safe Harbor Frameworks.

Safe Harbor Certification provides assurance to ClearStar Logistics’ background screening company clients and their employer customers, that ClearStar Logistics’ policies and procedures meet the stringent requirements of the Safe Harbor Principles. The Principles protect the privacy, security, integrity and accuracy of European Union and Swiss citizens’ personally identifiable information during collection, transfer and use of such information, from the EU and Switzerland to the U.S.

“Maintaining Safe Harbor Certification supports our long-standing commitment to securing the consumer data we are entrusted with and exemplifies our emerging belief that the consumer should have more ownership and control over the collection, transfer, use and accuracy of his or her personal information,” stated ClearStar Logistics President Vince Pascarella.

The European Commission’s Directive on Data Protection and the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner of Switzerland require organizations in countries that do not meet the EU “adequacy” standard for privacy protection to certify certain policies are in place to protect consumer data when transferred to such countries. To help U.S. organizations meet this requirement, the U.S. Department of Commerce developed the Safe Harbor frameworks.

Safe Harbor Certification includes agreement by the certified organization to adhere to the Safe Harbor Principles governing: consumer notice and choice about the collection, transfer, onward transfer and use of their personally identifiable information; access to such information; security and data integrity assurances; and mechanisms to enforce compliance. The Principles and a statement that the organization adheres to the Safe Harbor must also be incorporated into a published privacy policy.
