Ohio Makes $2.45 Million Available to Courts to Improve Criminal Background Check System

The Ohio Attorney General is making $2.45 million in grant money available to courts in the state “to help improve the system of criminal background checks and the accuracy and completeness of the state’s criminal records database,” according to a report from Court News Ohio (CNO). The office of Ohio Attorney General is accepting applications through May 15, 2024.

“Criminal background checks play a vital role in keeping the public safe,” CNO reported. “They are used by employers to screen potential employees tasked with the care of the most vulnerable people in schools, hospitals, nursing homes, and day care centers, among others.” The $2.45 million in grant money is available to qualifying applicants from three sources:

  • LiveScan Devices: $1.2 million will pay for more than 60 LiveScan devices, which the Attorney General’s office will distribute to qualifying entities through an application process.
  • Electronic Reporting and Juvenile Courts: $750,000 will be subgranted to facilitate the electronic reporting of adjudication information by Ohio’s juvenile courts.
  • Disposition Recovery: $500,000 will be subgranted to help defray the costs associated with the recovery of case dispositions not previously reported to the Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).

Over the years, the BCI – which serves as the state’s central repository for all fingerprint and criminal records – has been awarded grant funding from the National Criminal History Improvement Program (NCHIP) to modernize numerous aspects of the record keeping and reporting processes. The $2.45 million in grant money is part of this ongoing enhancement effort.
